Course content

This course consists of two modules, one focusing on children and young families, the other on adolescents. The course is for anyone working with children, young people and families who wish to increase their knowledge and skills in child and adolescent mental health work in a variety of settings (i.e. health, local authority, educational settings and or within the voluntary and independent sector) ie. newly qualified nurses (RMNs or RSCNs), possibly nursery nurses, child and adolescent counselors, family support workers, Social workers, Youth Workers.

The Advanced Diploma will develop knowledge and understanding of early childhood, adolescent and family emotional and mental development and of the common issues that can impact adversely upon this. It will explore the assessments and early work that might be possible to ameliorate later difficulty and or how to refer on appropriately to others agencies.

It will explore, examine and evaluate the contemporary health and social policy initiatives which support such work and develop both the knowledge needed and capabilities required for those working with children and families to confidently and safely realise that children's mental health can both be their business and that they feel capable to address it. The course will address and explore issues of equality and inequality, diversity, ethnic and cultural difference, ethical considerations in relation to practitioners work with service users and carers in child, adolescent and family mental health work.

The Postgraduate Certificate will provide the opportunity to update, enhance and develop your critical understanding, knowledge and advanced practice capabilities, in child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) work in multidisciplinary and multi-agency settings.

The Pg Cert aims to equip you with both the sophisticated knowledge needed and capabilities required to undertake CAMH work and in supporting others in working with children and families; to do so confidently and safely. It will address and explore issues of equity and inequality, diversity, ethnic and cultural difference, ethical considerations in relation to practitioners' work with service users and carers in child, adolescent and family mental health work. It aims to develop authoritative clinical leadership and professional practice capability in the field of child and adolescent mental health (Government response to CAMHS review DCSF 2010).
