Course content

Most companies have to survive in a business environment that is international, rapidly changing and increasingly competitive. Managing and leading such businesses requires a special combination of knowledge and skills – not just strategic thinking but also how to adapt to the different cultures and business practices throughout the world. The programme will develop your current business capabilities and prepare you for positions of responsibility in modern, dynamic organisations, particularly in a global context.

The programme is designed for students who have recently completed an undergraduate degree in business and management and who wish to continue their studies at Masters level. Such students should be aiming to join a company that has substantial global and international interests and receive rapid promotion to senior level. A number of options allow focus in specific areas of interest.

The programme extends the knowledge gained in a relevant undergraduate business management degree, whilst also providing a broader global context. The MSc Global Business Management programme attracts students from all around the world – it is global in both the classroom culture as well as the subjects being studied. To be successful on the programme, you will need enthusiasm, commitment, and a willingness to not only work hard but learn new ways of thinking. We also expect you to show initiative and be able to work independently.

The learning process aims to deepen and broaden your undergraduate learning. At the heart of the programme is the Global Organisational Behaviour module that will expose you to the challenges faced by managers of international businesses and how these can be overcome. Other modules develop expertise in functional areas such as Marketing and Finance while others focus on Global Strategic Management and HRM. In the second semester you will be able to choose from a set of option modules and thus tailor your study to your own areas of interest. Finally you will complete your research and the writing up of your dissertation – this is a major opportunity to become an expert in an aspect of international business in which you have a strong interest. You will have a personal research supervisor to support you in the process.

The ultimate aim is attainment of the generic postgraduate goals of strategic awareness, developing leadership potential and understanding the theory and practice of global business.

The programme extends existing knowledge and skills as students must already have studied business and management at undergraduate level; specific focus on the global business environment; an emphasis on the specific challenges of managing in a global business; special attention to the cultural challenges faced in global business.

Graduates have joined a wide range of businesses, in a variety of positions. The business is usually a large multinational or a smaller business with import/export links to a number of countries. Some graduates have gone back to work for a family business or started up their own businesses.

The programme is an ideal starting point for those business and management graduates who wish to undertake a career in a multi-national organisation.
