The Open University has been at the forefront of research into e-assessment in all its forms for many years. It acts as the global coordinator of the assessment elements of the open-source learning-management system, Moodle. Both formative and summative, e-assessment not only provides measures of student achievement but also delivers effective feedback that reinforces learning. It forms an increasingly crucial part of the assessment strategies adopted in universities worldwide.
The research will take place within eSTEeM, a cross-faculty centre that innovates and researches in STEM teaching. Based on our knowledge and expertise in the use of e-assessment we have focused research on a number of e-assessment areas, such as:
- the use of interactive computer-marked assessment, both in terms of the design of tools and pedagogy
- online peer assessment
- assessment of online practical work.
The outcomes of these projects not only lead to peer-reviewed articles but also inform future teaching and assessment strategies. This research benefits from the statistical power available from the large populations on OU modules.
