Course content

Housed in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the Mathematics Education Group’s research questions tend to arise from its own practice and concerns, with the aim of illuminating and understanding more fully various processes of learning and teaching mathematics. The same approach is recommended for potential PhD or MPhil students. Research is conducted using an eclectic range of qualitative and quantitative methods.

Department specialisms

Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for one of the research projects listed on the Department of Mathematics and Statistics’ PhD recruitment page. Projects in Mathematics Education may involve the following topics: Professional development of primary and secondary teachers of mathematics Pupils’ perceptions of mathematics lessons Problem-solving in primary mathematics classrooms Reflective learning in the primary mathematics classroom.
