MPhil: BA or BSc degree required; if aged 25+ relevant experience considered. PhD: BA/BSc/Masters degree or MPhil required.

Course content

No other department in the world specialises in both the theory and practice of the traditional arts/crafts. Students are encouraged to pursue their own particular skills - whether it be painting, woodcarving, jewellery, stained-glass, ceramics etc, at the same time as attending classes of geometry, calligraphy, arabesque and others.

Department specialisms

Practice and Theory of Visual Islamic and Traditional Arts: Arabesque, Plaster-carving, Stone-carving, Traditional Painting Methods, Universal Meaning/Function of Sacred and Traditional Arts of the World.

Information for international students

Connections include Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Egypt, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan, Jordan and the USA. Our students come from many different countries, cultures and backgrounds.

Fees and funding

British citizens and EEC students with an MA could possibly apply to the AHRC for funding.
