Entry requirements

Course entry is at Stage 2 (SCQF Level 8) and so applicants will be expected to have attained an HNC or SVQ3 or equivalent.

Eligibility for advanced entry by portfolio into SCQF Level 9 for those with a related degree or a SVQ4 or equivalent.

Course content

The BA Residential Child Care course content is mapped to the Standard for Residential Child Care in Scotland (2013) and is a recognised Level 9 qualification for all Residential Child Care workers in Scotland. The course is designed for those who are currently in employment in the Residential Child Care Sector. Completion of this course will allow you to advance in your chosen career in Residential Child Care Services. Overview
Year 1
You will develop an understanding of Social Policy, Legislation and the history of Residential Child Care Services. Your skills as a residential child care worker will be enhanced through studying theories of development, citizenship and adversity. You will have opportunities to develop your oral and written communication skills through team and individual tasks.

Year 2
You will undertake a 60 day work-based placement enabling you to apply and critique the theory base from year 1. Your placement will also encourage the development of reflective practice skills. Further academic learning supports your development as an analytical practitioner – skills that are essential to best practice in the sector.

Year 3

Your final year will prepare you for working as an autonomous practitioner who understands the importance of self leadership within an inter professional context. You will undertake a second work-based placement which will develop your knowledge and practice according to professional standards.

Information for international students

Postgraduate courses normally require an IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all 4 components. Some of our courses require a different level of English. Please check our course pages for specific details. Test reports are valid for a period of 2 years and can be used as proof of English for admission if valid on the start date of your course.
