Entry requirements

Applicants should usually possess a degree in subject areas related to heritage, archaeology, history, land management, planning or geography at Lower Second (2.2) or higher. If you have no formal qualifications it may also be possible to join the programme based on extensive relevant work experience corresponding in level to an undergraduate honours degree. In all cases entry is subject to a satisfactory interview either in person or via Skype/Zoom or similar platforms.

Historic Environment Management (also called Heritage Management) is concerned with the ways in which inheritance can be explored, protected, conserved, stewarded, interpreted, sensitively re-purposed and re-used. It is also about reconciling the conflicts which arise from different stakeholders’ views of heritage, its uses and its future. You will develop people and management skills as well as skills around heritage itself, helping to give the past a sustainable future.

This programme builds a robust philosophical, theoretical and ethical framework while developing critical awareness of the practice of conservation and stewardship in the UK and internationally. It will tackle the issues which arise from rapid social, economic and environmental change. Through the dissertation or professional product you will grow, and demonstrate skills in creativity, adaptability, autonomy, ethics, communications, knowledge creation and the use of evidence in the analysis of complex, incomplete or contradictory areas of understanding.

You can become part of the next generation of historic environment management professionals capable of working with equal facility and sensitivity across the public, private and charitable sectors. Designed in collaboration with professionals working in Historic Environment Management this course will be of value to both recent graduates and those in employment who are seeking to diversify their historic environment skills portfolio.

This programme is delivered by blended learning using intensive tuition days interspersed with guided and independent distance learning with online group-work and individual tutorials and mentoring.

The programme emphasises a hands-on collaborative learning style where students are encouraged and enabled to contribute to knowledge generation. The goal is to grow confidence and support your transition into a professional role.

This programme can be taken full-time in one year, part-time in two years or by credit accumulation over a maximum period of four years. This flexible and student-centred approach is designed to fit around your working life.

The Programme Tutors are all heritage professionals with considerable experience in both academia and the heritage sector. Students will also have opportunities to work with our Professional Fellows who are embedded in historic environment organisations.

Course structure

The programme consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation or professional product. Six of the taught modules form a compulsory core to which are added a further two option-modules from a slate of available courses. You will also have the choice of replacing one option module with a work-based-learning project targeted at an agreed outcome or product. Module assessments are very varied but all involve different forms of course work.

In addition to the taught modules you will produce either an academic dissertation focusing on a particular research topic of interest to you or a professional product of comparable standard and complexity such as a site report, landscape study or a conservation management plan. In either case your dissertation allows you to showcase the skills acquired and can provide springboard to further research or employment.

The programme involves extensive collaboration with governmental, charitable and commercial organisations across the heritage sector. This includes guided visits to case study locations, guest lectures, seminars and workshops, research projects and professional contributions such as mentoring. The input from heritage professionals will be invaluable in helping you develop a grounded, reflective, approach to their career.

Stewardship of Heritage Sites: Visitors, Operations, Activities & Events

Students may choose to substitute an agreed programme of work based learning (either in their own role or as a placement with one of our partners) for one of the option modules.
