Course overview

Discover creative and critical approaches to writing in the context of curatorial practice, and develop your skills with leading writers and curators working across the contemporary art and design sector, live online.

The Curating Contemporary Art and Design: Writing Intensive offers a dynamic introduction to writing in the context of curating contemporary art and design. This interactive online course invites you to explore the role of writing across different modes of curatorial practice; from exhibition-making to commissioning, programming, online presentations, performances, and publishing.

Writing is a critical part of contemporary curatorial practice. It plays a vital role in the mediation, framing and interpretation of art and design; from press releases, to exhibition texts, to websites, to catalogues, to art criticism, to discursive programmes, to experimental publication formats across offline and online media.

Whether articulated through text, image, performance or sound, writing offers a creative space in which the curatorial voice can enter into dialogue with that of the artist or designer, with artworks and design objects, with institutions, with audiences, and with social, cultural and political discourses. As art and design practitioners seek to respond to increasingly urgent global conditions, writing provides a transdisciplinary medium through which to interrogate questions of communication and translation in a rapidly changing world.

Through the Curating Contemporary Art and Design: Writing Intensive you will encounter cutting edge approaches to curatorial writing across the contemporary art and design sector, delivered by leading curators, researchers and writers. The programme combines analytical debate with practical activities and writing exercises, taught from the world’s leading art and design university and delivered online in an interactive learning environment. As a participatory forum, the course provides opportunities to engage directly with our faculty of experts and visiting speakers, as well as building a network of peer-to-peer relationships.

Course Team

The course is led by Dr Rosie Ram, Visiting Lecturer in MA Curating Contemporary Art and Course Leader of the Curating Contemporary Art and Design: Theory and Practice Summer School, and Jeremy Millar, Head of Programme for Writing MA.
