Course content

We achieved an extremely high ranking in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), which placed us 3rd among Music departments for the quality of our research. Our work on music covers a broad chronology (from early medieval to contemporary) and geography (spanning the Americas - including the Caribbean, Asia and Europe). Much of our research crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries and integrates perspectives from the fields of ethnomusicology, musicology, theory and composition, understood in the broadest terms.

Department specialisms

History (Medieval France/England, Renaissance/Baroque Italy, 19th-20th centuries); Analysis (Pre-1700, 18th-20th centuries); Performance Studies (Analysis and Performance, Historical Performance); Gender Studies; Early Modernism; Ethnomusicology; Film Music.
