Entry requirements

Typically an English undergraduate degree of 2.1 or higher. Those with related undergraduate degrees of 2.1 or higher are considered on individual merit.

Overseas students whose first language is not English willbe required to provide certified competence in English language in the form ofBritish Council IELTS test band 7 or above, with a score of at least 7 in allcomponents, or equivalent. If necessary, an offer of a place to read for aresearch degree may be made subject to successful completion of an appropriateperiod of pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes training to enhanceperformance on the research degree programme above the minimum levels ofcompetence outlined above. Applicants with a first degree taught wholly inEnglish will not generally be required to provide other evidence of EnglishLanguage proficiency.

If you do not have such academic qualifications we may consider your application individually, based on your personal, professional and work experience, and other formal qualifications. You may also be able to claim credit points which can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your qualification at Sheffield Hallam. Find out more

This course enables you to research an aspect of English literature and become a specialist in your area. You will gain skills and knowledge to continue your professional development and prepare you for PhD level study.
