All applicants need GCSE mathematics and English language at grade C or above or equivalent*. We will consider applicants who are in the process of obtaining the relevant GCSEs.
You must also
• hold an honours degree (normally 2.2 or above) or equivalent which includes substantial elements of food, nutrition or design and technology study
• successfully complete QTS skills test in numeracy and literacy as designated by the National College for Teaching and Leadership
• complete a declaration of criminal convictions and health check forms
We may also consider applicants with an unrelated degree who have a sound food background in employment and have a GCSE or A level in food technology.
You are encouraged to gain experience of schools through direct observation of teaching and learning and/or by working with young people in food or design and technology-related or other educational activities.
If you are shortlisted, we will invite you to a selection event, and you should bring a passport or photo driving license with you. You can bring other forms of photo ID for the selection event, but if you do, you will still need to present valid identity documents required by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) at your pre-course day. Months of entry
This course is designated 11-16 with post- 16 enhancement. This means that you will be trained to teach Design and Technology (Food) and will be assessed against the Teachers' Standards at KS3 and KS4 across the 11-16 age range. Your timetable at school will include teaching at KS3 and KS4. In addition to this you will have a post-16 experience. The majority of trainees are placed in an 11-18 school for one of their periods of school based training and will be involved in planning, teaching and assisting in KS5 lessons. For the minority, who are not placed in an 11-18 school a four day placement will be organised in a post-16 setting. You will also be supported in preparing to teach at KS5 through the subject knowledge and pedagogy sessions at the University. You will not be assessed against the Teachers' Standards at K55.
