Entry requirements

You must submit the following items with your application for admission:

  • Evidence of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university with a cumulative overall undergraduate average of at least B (3.0/4.0)
  • Evidence of at least 24 credit hours of undergraduate preparation in history with an overall average of 3.0; students who lack this preparation may fulfill the requirement by taking undergraduate courses approved by the graduate director
  • Two letters of recommendation attesting to your academic quality
  • A personal statement detailing your professional goals and personal experience

Course content

In the Master of Arts program in History at St. John’s University, you’ll enjoy seminar-style classes that build a broad knowledge of history’s main currents, along with the opportunity to specialize in an area of concentration. You’ll gain proficiency in research, written and oral communication, decision making, and critical thinking.

To fulfill requirements for the degree, you’ll take a minimum of 33 credits in graduate history courses with at least 18 credits focusing in one of the following areas of concentration:

  • United States History
  • European History
  • World History
  • Gender History
