PgDip Evidence-based Orthopaedics is a modular postgraduate educational programme which provides training within trauma and orthopaedics. It enhances your career progression towards a consultant post. The programme is flexible and modular, covering a range of subjects relevant to trauma and orthopaedics. Credits from the component modules can be combined to provide a certificate, diploma or master’s-level qualification. The knowledge and skills you develop throughout the programme support your progression in training and future consultant practice.
To provide evidence-based care you need to develop your understanding of the concepts and principles underpinning trauma and orthopaedic care. You must be able to find, critically evaluate and apply relevant research evidence to ensure this is both clinically and cost effective. The knowledge and skills you develop enhance your clinical practice in trauma and orthopaedics. This helps you contribute to the orthopaedic knowledge base.
Throughout the programme you are encouraged to focus on topical issues within current trauma and orthopaedic practice. You can concentrate on aspects of practice that are particularly relevant to your specific interests and practice.
How you learn
The learning and teaching strategy is flexible, to fit around your work commitments. The trauma and orthopaedics module is taught in blocks of two or three days. You can take all other modules by attending classes, as distance learning, or a mix of both. Attendance learning uses a mix of lectures, practical activities, group work and group discussion. Distance learning is interactive and delivered electronically through the virtual learning environment. Tutorial support is provided through both routes.
How you are assessed
You are assessed for each module by written assignments, oral exams, written exams and statistical analysis.
The programme enhances your ability to provide evidence-based care and helps your career progression towards a consultant post. You also have an opportunity to strengthen your publication record.
