Course content

Our PhD/MPhil Gastroenterology programme enables you to undertake a research project that will improve understanding of Gastroenterology.

Gastroenterology is the study of disorders of the digestive system. Gastrointestinal and liver diseases are common, and have a major impact on health and wellbeing across the life course.

Gastroenterology research at The University of Manchester extends from understanding basic gut physiology and the mechanisms of disease, through to investigation and treatment.

Our work spans the spectrum from cellular and molecular studies, animal models of disease and whole human physiology to clinical studies and trials, and health service research.

Examples of current research activities include:

  • neurogastroenterology and the brain-gut axis
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • liver disease
  • irritable bowel syndrome and other functional disorders
  • clinical nutrition and intestinal failure
  • gastrointestinal surgery
  • Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer
  • mucosal immunology
  • the gut microbiota
  • gut endocrinology
  • appetite and satiety in health and disease
