About Distance and Independent Studies Center
Who we are and what we do?
Do you want to continue your education, but want to be able to arrange your learning times flexibly alongside your career and family? Then a distance learning programme at the Distance and Independent Studies Center (DISC) of the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern is just right for you.
The DISC focuses on service-oriented study support: The studies are most important! In Addition to practical and up-to-date study contents, we focus on scientific quality through renowned scientific directors and trainers in the study progammes. At DISC, learning is made easy by a methodical-didactic preparation of the learning materials. Future-oriented online-based communication and learning paths are taken. The scientific institution offers a wide range of German-language programmes, but also a total of four English-language programmes, which will be briefly described below.
How we are structured
The DISC can be structured in three main departments: Human Resources, Management & Law and Science & Engineering. The programmes of the Human Resources department focus on social sciences and are aimed at professionals in the areas pedagogy and continuing education, school, consulting, etc. On the other hand, the programmes of the Management & Law department focus on economics and law and are aimed at professionals in management or in business, in NPO or public institutions. Last but not least, the programmes of the Science & Engineering department focus on natural sciences and technology and are aimed at professionals in the areas natural sciences and medicine, engineering and psychology, etc.

Our Campus
The DISC is located on the campus of the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern. Therefore, the students have access to different cafes and also to a canteen. In direct neighborhood to the campus supermarkets, restaurants, a pharmacy and hairdressers are available. A gym and several sports fields are located directly on the campus. Moreover, there are many small sports stations distributed across the campus for quick sports sessions, especially between two learning events. The city center of Kaiserslautern can be reached in 10 minutes by car or bus and the train station is only five minutes away.

Master (blended learning) of Evaluation (MABLE)
The distance learning programme provides the participants with the opportunity to acquire scientific knowledge and skills in the area of evaluation and monitoring, a necessary requirement for the design, implementation and management of evaluations. The course focus on topics such as
- Introduction to evaluation,
- Conducting and managing evaluations,
- Data collection and data analysis methods,
- Economic evaluation and M&E in context of organisations,
- Key qualifications for communication in the field of evaluations,
- Evaluation Design,
- Evaluation of sustainability and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Master Financial Engineering
The distance learning programme provides the participants with the necessary advanced and theoretical foundations and competencies in the areas of financial mathematics and financial economics, the ability to create links to actuarial science, and imparts statistical and numerical methods. The course focus on topics such as
- Financial mathematics,
- Interest rate models,
- Financial decision making,
- Economics of banking,
- Insurance mathematics,
- Risk measures and rating systems,
- Financial statistics,
- Computational methods in finance.
Master Software Engineering for Embedded Systems
The distance learning programme provides the participants with well-founded theoretical knowledge and the ability to acquire according practical methods, techniques and tools in the field of software engineering. Therefore, the course focus on topics such as
- Project management,
- Software quality assurance,
- Software product line engineering,
- Requirements engineering,
- Software architecture for embedded software systems,
- Component-based software development,

- Real-time systems and dependability engineering.
Certificate Nanobiotechnology
The Certificate programme provides the participants with well-founded theoretical knowledge and practical qualifications in the field of nanobiotechnology. Therefore, the course focus on topics such as

- Nanostructures (for example scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy),
