Summary

Ever since the oil boom of the 1970s Petroleum Geoscience has been taught at Master's level at University of Aberdeen, in the city which is home to one of the main energy centres in the world. This programme is known in the industry to provide results in terms of trained professionals with the skills that are relevant to the industry worldwide. You study all aspects of upstream geoscience from exploration to field appraisal, development and maximising recovery from mature fields to enable you to perform a variety of technical functions and tasks. Our MSc students have close interaction with professional societies who meet regularly in Aberdeen:

  • Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain (PESGB)
  • Aberdeen Formation Evaluation (AFES)
  • Energy Institute
  • Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)

Industry Links and Careers

University of Aberdeen has been training highly skilled professionals across the specialist and professional supply chain for the oil and gas industry since the 1970s. The department work with Apache, Statoil, Baker Hughes, BP, Chevron, Conoco Phillips, Dana, Halliburton, Shell, Pemex, SaudiAramco and many others. Graduates can expect to work in careers such as Exploratoin Geologist, Exploration Geoscientist, Petrophysicst, Project Geoscientist, Regional Exploratoin Geoscientist, Senior Geologist in companies in the oil and gas and energy markets.
