Entry requirements

Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree at Honours level, or equivalent. - Applicants should hold a relevant, current, professional qualification as a registered healthcare professional. - Three optional units (HCE002-6, HCE028-6, HCE033-6) have specific pre-requisites, due to their specialist nature (see course specific regulations for additional information).

About the course

Designed for nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals, this course will support your professional development, and extend the scope of your practice and specialist knowledge. It will also help you develop a scholarly and evidenced-based approach to your practice, and equip you with the skills to have a positive influence on people, teams and organisations. It offers a flexible, vocational educational framework with a strong emphasis on inter-professional learning and working, provides opportunities for you to work both autonomously and collaboratively, and will prepare you to work across professional boundaries.

Intermediate qualifications available:

  • Postgraduate certificate – 60 credits at Masters level
  • Postgraduate diploma – 120 credits at Masters level

It will also enable you to develop a scholarly and evidenced based approach to healthcare practice, equipping you with skills to influence the development of individual, team and organisational practice.

The course combines core and optional units, allowing individualised development plans to be created, with the support of a named tutor. Your expert course team draw on extensive practice and research experience, to ensure an applied, contemporary and research-informed approach to your studies.

Career opportunities

This course has been designed to enable you to extend your scope of practice and to develop your specialist knowledge base. The course therefore positions and equips you to have a positive impact on the design, delivery and evaluation of healthcare practices at individual, team and organisational levels.
There are three key ways in which this achieved. Firstly, through core units that provide a foundation for your studies , focussing on evidence based healthcare practice. Secondly, through a curriculum design that includes a wide range of unit options, so you can tailor your studies to areas of practice and emerging expertise. Thirdly through teaching, learning and assessment methods that foster strong connections between learning on the course and workplace practices.


You will have access to an expert course team who are able to share `live examples from their own professional practice and/or research activity. You will meet visiting staff who work as healthcare leaders and practitioners. You will have opportunities to rehearse and develop professional thinking and behaviours in group work, tailored assessment tasks and in simulated practice. Assessment tasks are designed with input from healthcare employers and education leads within NHS Trusts. These tasks allow you to demonstrate your ability to communicate complex information in a range of ways, for a range of purposes and audiences, including managers, colleagues, patients and their carers.

This course therefore allows you to develop your current practice and prepare for future roles, supporting your employability and career progression
