The position will be open to students with:

  • An upper second class honours degree or better, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and/or
  • Relevant and sufficient industrial work experience in any relevant mathematics, chemical/material/physical sciences, engineering (EPSRC provides funding only for UK/EU applicants).

This EPSRC-sponsored doctoral training programme focuses on research into structural metallic systems for gas turbine applications, covering alloy and process development, cost-reduction, life cycle analysis and environmental degradation.

This course is open to our partner institutions only.

Materials underpin almost all industrial sectors and the global challenges have increased the demand for materials engineers and researchers.

The School of Metallurgy and Materials has long been a centre of excellence in materials research and education. This EPSRC-sponsored four-year PhD with integrated studies programme, suitable both for full-time students and seconded employees, combines 12 taught modules (120 credits) in Advanced Metallurgy/Materials, Materials Processing and Professional Development and a major research project carried in a broad range of topics related to metallic materials used in gas turbines.

Students are normally based in the University and research projects can be carried out in the School or in industry.

Standard English language requirements apply (IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band).

International students applying for this programme will need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office before the University can issue you with a Certificate of Acceptance of Studies (CAS).
