Entry requirements

The Faculty offers two postgraduate degrees, a 1-Year MPhil and the PhD. Applicants to these programmes require a high 2:1 at BA level from a UK university or the equivalent from an overseas university, but entrance is at the discretion of the Degree Committee, which judges each applicant on his or her own merits and in accordance with its own supervisory capacity. Prospective graduate students must have a working knowledge of the language relevant to the area in which they wish to study.

1-Year MPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Chinese Studies) * Offered as a taught MPhil or by research only. 1-Year MPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (East Asian Studies) * Offered only as a taught MPhil. 1-Year MPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Hebrew Studies) * Offered as a taught MPhil or by research only. 1-Year MPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Japanese Studies) * Offered only as a research MPhil - by dissertation only. 1-Year MPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies) * Offered as a taught MPhil or by research only. 1-Year MPhil in Sanskrit and South Asian Studies * Offered as a taught MPhil or by research only.

Course content

CHINESE STUDIES: A good knowledge of at least Modern Chinese, both oral and written will be assumed.
EAST ASIAN STUDIES: Evidence of a good knowledge of Japanese and/or Modern Chinese and/ or Korean.
Both oral and written will be assumed.
HEBREW STUDIES: Evidence of a good knowledge of Hebrew or Hebrew and Aramaic.
JAPANESE STUDIES:Evidence of a good knowledge of Japanese, both oral and written will be assumed.
MIDDLE EASTERN AND ISLAMIC STUDIES:Evidence of a good knowledge of Arabic and/or Persian.
Both oral and written will be assumed.
SOUTH ASIAN STUDIES:Evidence of proficiency in foreign languages is beneficial.

Information for international students

Non-native speakers of English will need to have either an IELTS minimum score of 7.5 overall (with 7.0 in each element); or a TOEFL minimum score of 620 or 260 in the computer-based test; or 110 in iBT, plus 5.0 TWE.
