Course content

The Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Business (PG Dip) is a Master's-level accredited programme from the University of Cambridge. It has been designed for senior and mid-career professionals and managers who wish to keep their knowledge of cutting-edge responses to sustainability challenges and opportunities up to date.

For over 20 years the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) has delivered part-time graduate programmes for business professionals. This course is designed for those who want to expand their learning beyond the Postgraduate Certificates in Sustainable Business (PCSB) or Sustainable Value Chains (PCSVC), and provides a flexible alternative to the Master of Studies in Sustainability Leadership (Master’s) for continuing professional development.

The PG Dip provides the opportunity to take a ‘deeper dive’ into topical and emergent leadership responses to sustainability in a business context. It enables participants to explore a variety of levers for change through an academically rigorous, but practically focused and directly relevant learning experience.

Delivered on a part-time basis, it offers a forum for focused professional development, giving participants the flexibility to shape their learning to suit their own or organisational needs and interests.

Participants can take from around 1.5 to 3.5 years to complete the programme. It is completed in two parts, with the second part offering considerable flexibility and choice. In the first part of the programme students complete either the Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Business or the Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Value Chains. In part 2 they choose to attend three Leadership Labs based on topical themes and cutting edge research.

The programme is delivered using a blended learning approach combining short residential seminars, complemented by remote, online learning through a dedicated Virtual Learning Environment. Students are assessed through a variety of assignments over the course of the programme.

The strength of the programme lies in the combination of access to Cambridge sustainability research and extensive University resources, with an emphasis on collaborative learning, peer networking, and real-life application to business contexts. Students have all the benefits of a rigorous programme accredited by the University, whilst being supported by expert supervisors to apply their learning to mainstream business practice.

The overall experience is enhanced by attending residential seminars in Cambridge that provide exposure to the University’s world-class facilities and history.

Fees and funding

International students

Bursary funding has been made available for deserving candidates who are currently prevented from applying due to financial reasons. These will offer financial support of 10–30 per cent of the programme fee, and in some exceptional cases up to 50 per cent of the programme fee, to assist selected applicants. Bursaries are normally awarded to candidates from developing countries, self-funding individuals, those affiliated with a non -governmental organisation or the public sector and occasionally to SMEs. Successful applicants will meet all the programme requirements.

Candidates should apply through the normal route and indicate on the application form their request to be considered for a bursary. On the application form applicants will be asked to submit a one page that describes:

  • Why they require a bursary to attend
  • How they meet the eligibility requirements for receiving a bursary
  • An indication of the amount of support required
  • How attendance at the programme will impact them
  • Any other compelling reasons why a bursary should be awarded
  • How they have pursued all other available funding opportunities

Participants awarded a bursary might be asked to provide evidence that they are able to pay the remaining programme fees.
