If you wish to follow this route you must initially apply for MSc Cancer Biology and Therapy and successfully complete the first semester modules.

MRes Cancer Biology and Therapy at UCLan aims to provide students with an in depth theoretical and practical knowledge of the biological processes associated with cancer and the development of new therapies. This course is taught by researchers who have published extensively in the field of cancer biology and who have close research links with Brain Tumour North West and Royal Preston Hospital.

The course comprises of 3 months of taught lectures, tutorials and lab work followed by a 6 month, full-time, independent laboratory based research project under the supervision of active cancer researchers. Research themes include: analysis of phytochemicals for cancer treatment; development and characterization of novel drug delivery systems; potential of aspirin analogues in the treatment of glioma; use of aptamers as diagnostic and therapeutic agents for brain tumours; and synthesis of bioactive molecules with anticancer properties.

Learning environment and Assessment

The course aims to extend your knowledge and understanding of the biology of cancer, advances in prognosis, diagnosis and treatment, and to give you an appreciation of pertinent legislative and ethical issues.

The school is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment based in our Biomedical Research Facility and the Biological Sciences Laboratories (Teaching), that will enhance your research experience. A range of teaching and learning methods will be used including lectures, practical work, case studies and research proposals; with the extended research project aimed at developing students research skills including effective decision making; planning and executing experimental studies; and recording and interpreting data.

As well as core lectures, students are invited to attend the Postgraduate School Research Seminar Series and Research Theme days featuring both internal and visiting speakers.

Opportunities

Students will be given the opportunity to attend the annual Brain Tumour North West meeting, held in Preston in December each year.

Graduate Careers

This postgraduate course will prepare you for further study to PhD level or a career in the biotechnology industries.

Progression Routes

This course aims to create an ethos of continued learning and course graduates would be encouraged to continue their research studies to PhD level within the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences.
