The Professional Doctorate in Creative Arts (Creative Practice) will ultimately help you progress your career and creative goals. This programme has practice at the forefront of the research through testing defined methodologies, developing your own personal and professional curiosity in a specific area of academic interest.

This course is offered with start dates in March, June, September and December.

You’ll study a major creative practice project and make a contribution to new and original knowledge in your chosen field; in a supportive framework within a supervisory team, who will help you develop your research topic and keep you on track.

• Programme routes include Creative Practice, Arts-Health, Music Industry Management and Promotion and Music
• Conceptualise and realise a diagnostic pilot arts project that is suitable for further development within a professional doctorate.
• You’ll successfully realise a major creative project alongside its documentation, analysis and critical evaluation.

• Demonstrate mastery of creative skills and evidence the development of new and original applications and/or connections.
• You’ll enhance complex conceptual, contextual, theoretical, and philosophical understanding.
• Identify and evaluate criteria relevant to the formulation of a rigorous research presentation.

In the Professional Doctorate emphasis is progressively placed upon student-led independent studies conducted as practitioner research. You are also supported in your independent learning by the provision of in-person one-to-one (1:1) tutorials, group tutorials, supervisory meetings, virtual and email tutorials and/or telephone tutorials. Essential facilitation for independent studies is given at taught sessions wherein teaching and learning methods are tailored to the modular contents.

At Level 7 specific research methods are introduced and developed according to the specific intention of each individual student. Planning and management of projects are tested according to the direction of the research. Developments in practice are scaled to suit the wider goals for Level 8, but also be in keeping with expectations for master’s level study.

At Level 8 the research focus is articulated towards approval by a Research Degree board. Pilots projects are tested through rigorous planning and techniques are explored through practice, context and reflective evaluation. During this aspect of your course, you will be designated a Director of Studies (DoS) who will oversee all aspects of your study.

You’ll be prepared for the Doctorate Arts Practice whereby you fully realise a practice-based doctorate arts project that makes a significant contribution to original knowledge. Leading through to the Viva Voce where you will be able to defend your specific contribution to original knowledge.
