Course content

The MSc Nursing is designed to equip nurses with the knowledge, skills, personal, professional and inter-professional insights needed to confront, challenge and shape the future of their practice. Continuing changes in health and social care policy and practice have affected the way in which nursing is practised. One of the greatest challenges facing nursing today is to build on the essence of nursing as a caring profession whilst incorporating new technologies, ideas and approaches to healthcare. This programme offers you the opportunity to stand back and take an in-depth and considered review of nursing in order to face the challenges and opportunities of the future. All students will take three core modules, two or three optional modules and a dissertation. The focus can be on one of the four themes of Practice, Research, Leadership or Education or a mixture to suit individual requirements. If you leave before completing the course you can exit with a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) or a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits).
All students will take three compulsory modules and a dissertation option. Depending upon the size of your dissertation module, you will also take two or three optional modules (see course at a glance). These will be selected from a short menu of choices selected to support a focus on research, practice, management or education in nursing. If you wish you can choose your options across the range of options. All students will participate in a Personal Development Centre creating a personal profile of abilities, attributes and skills and develop a learning contract. You will use the learning contract to develop and enhance your personal profile in collaboration with your personal tutor.
