Course content

English is a global language with millions of people wanting to learn it. Teaching English is a truly rewarding and fulfilling career, and one which will enable you to travel widely and come into contact with other cultures. There’s an increasing demand for well-qualified TESOL professionals around the world and with our TESOL with Applied Linguistics you’ll be well-equipped to teach English to non-native speakers.

This postgraduate degree course gives you a thorough grounding in teaching methodology, classroom management, and an in-depth knowledge of lexis, grammar and phonology, and the way in which language is learned. It’ll also help you to develop the analytical and reflective skills you need to continue to develop as a professional.

Full-time: 1 year, starting in September

Part-time: 3 years, starting in January, April or September

Why study with us

  • You’ll work in small groups of British and international students, so you’ll really get to know each other and your tutors, and learn from each other to reach your potential.
  • The course aims to highlight the main principles and theories underpinning TESOL practice which you can link to your teaching experience.
  • It’s taught by people who are academic researchers, practitioners and teacher-trainers in their own right with a range of experience in a variety of teaching contexts around the world.

Learning and assessment

All classes involve interactive teaching and workshops with no traditional lectures. You’ll be expected to prepare thoroughly for all classes and review them afterwards, as well as undertaking extensive follow-up reading. In your self-study time you can take advantage of the University’s facilities.

Face to face classes, of approximately eight hours, run Monday to Wednesday during the daytime (9am - 5pm) in semesters one and two. Thursday and Friday are self-study days. Semester three has no scheduled classes so you can work on your dissertation.

You’ll complete a total of nine modules (180 credits) of which the dissertation makes up a triple module. The core of this postgraduate course covers three key areas: language teaching methodology, how second languages are learned or acquired, and the study of language itself. You’ll also complete a 12,000 word dissertation on a topic you want to investigate. You’ll have structured input on research methods and be allocated a supervisor to support your research.

You’ll attend the regular research seminars held in the School, which will feed into your research methods module and prepare you for your dissertation in semester three.
