Course content

These courses have been designed to enhance the professional development of qualified social workers, nurses, occupational therapists and psychologists. The curriculum for the PG Cert reflects the GSCC requirements for the statutory role of the Approved Mental Health Professional under the Mental Health Act 1983 as amended by the Mental Health Act 2007. It includes modules such as Legal and Professional Roles, Theory and Practice of Mental Health Law, Mental Health and Diversity and Models of Mental Disorder.

The PG Dip and MA will build on the modules and learning of the PG Cert. Students will be able to reflect more critically on the needs of service users and their carers; to maximise outcomes for their benefit; to review the nature of multi-professional and multi-agency working; to critically assess the nature and direction of mental health policy; and to develop skills in risk assessment and the protection of service users.
