Students are expected to secure their own preferred Internship with a suitable employer with the support and guidance of the School.

Course content

The MA Internship in International Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management offers you the opportunity to study core modules whilst enabling further academic preference towards either the tourism or hospitality and event management sector.

There is a strong focus on employability within the service sector industries throughout the course and the management abilities required in this demanding and dynamic industry.

On successful completion of studying principles and practice in tourism, hospitality and events and personal management development, you will progress onto a specific period of internship within industry.

• Affiliated to the Association of Tourism in Higher Education (ATHE).
• Links with a range of varied employers across the service sector, both within the UK and overseas.
• This course has been accredited by the Institute of Hospitality, the professional body for managers and aspiring managers in the hospitality, leisure and tourism industry worldwide.

• You’ll get the opportunity to undertake work experience based on your interests, ambitions and career goals.
• You’ll practise for a career in tourism, hospitality and event management or a related occupation by developing professional and transferable skills. The four forms of industrial practice are: a period of work placement within industry, the opportunity to mentor/shadow key personnel, contribution to a specific consultancy initiative, or involvement within an active project management scheme.
• You’ll gain knowledge and understanding of the subject of tourism, hospitality and events and be able to evaluate contemporary issues in tourism, hospitality and events and related areas in the light of this knowledge and your work experience.

The learning environment is organised to ensure that key concepts, theories, and where appropriate, practices relevant to management in the tourism and hospitality industry form a central role in teaching and learning.

Throughout the programme you’ll engage in a range of learning activities including lectures, seminars, THE management-related projects, presentations, group work and many more.

Assessment on each of the module(s) is designed to maximise your learning in relation to subject-specific knowledge and personal ability to use problem-solving skills within a real working environment. Additional inter-personal skills include communication, teamwork and active learning shared with others. Assessment types include reports, essays, oral and multi-media presentations, debates and a Management Consultancy Project.

Academic knowledge is acquired through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, presentations, simulation exercises and guest speakers. Directed reading and self-study will enhance both knowledge and understanding. Vocational teaching and learning is disseminated through an accrued time period of individual exposure, involvement and contribution to a real-world vocational environment.

The ability to communicate and converse well in English is essential within Internships. The programme is designed for graduates seeking vocational exposure into the tourism, hospitality and event industry and for industry employees who seek academic advancement upon which to further their career. You’ll be expected to secure your own preferred Internship with a suitable employer with the support and guidance of the School.
