Entry requirements

To be eligible to apply for an MPhil or PhD programmes, applicants should normally have, or expect to obtain, at least an upper second class honours degree in a discipline appropriate to their intended area of research. Substantial prior research experience may, in some instances, be acceptable in place of a first degree qualification. If you are not sure whether this might apply to you, our Graduate School will be able to advise you.

Course content

Studying for an MPhil or a PhD is very much an individual activity, and research topics vary widely, according to personal interests. As one of our students, we will help to nurture your interests and develop skills and insights essential to your future progress.

To assist you, we offer access to modern, well-equipped laboratories and library facilities, and are also able to support prospective students in developing their research proposals.

The Department has research specialisms across Francophone Area Studies, with a particular strength in literary and cultural politics in Francophone Africa. Research staff in the Spanish section supervise postgraduate research in visual cultures, Latin American studies, Iberian and Spanish cultural and political studies.
