Research within the Division of Civil Engineering is undertaken within two thematic groups, namely Environment and Infrastructure, within which smaller specialised research sub-groups operate.
An important overlap between the Environment and Infrastructure themes lies in the area of sustainability and sustainable economic development, where emphasis is placed on preservation of natural resources through the recycling of waste materials, perceived infrastructure threats posed by climate changes and the development of the urban environment in terms of the whole life cycle from inception to eventual demolition or re-use.
Research within the Environment theme encompasses problems and processes related to:
- The health and quality of the water, air and land environments;
- The protection, exploitation and improvement of these regions;
- The environmental consequences of historical, present or future anthropogenic activities.
Research classified within the Environment theme is focussed strongly upon various aspects of construction, including construction materials and methods and applications of structural analysis on the one hand to the management of construction projects on the other. The nature of the theme is such that multidisciplinary research projects are created readily by the application of methods of structural analysis to biomedical and architectural problems.
