Normally an Honours degree at 2.1 level or above in computing or a related subject. However if a student can demonstrate that their employment history is equivalent to a degree at 2.1 level then they will be eligible for the course, subject to passing an interview by the Recognition of Prior Learning committee. If an applicant's first language is not English there should also be evidence of a sufficient level of proficiency in English: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 580. All prospective students need to undergo a technical interview to ensure they have the necessary background knowledge to undertake the course.
Months of entry
Students will gain a Masters-level postgraduate education in the knowledge, skills and understanding of argumentation research and technologies. They will be provided with advanced knowledge and skills in the professional analysis of argumentation technology and opinion mining, and be able to understand and engage with recent developed technologies which support the analysis of argumentation and the evaluation of public opinions.
The course will cover a range of specialised theories, concepts, methods and technologies for reasoning, argumentation technology and opinion analysis, and students will learn to analyse and evaluate argumentation and debate in which opinions are expressed. Further topics covered include the identification of argument structures and schemes in data related to public opinions; the extraction of information and its justification from texts in natural language; and the creation and assessment of maps of the processes of decision making and negotiation. Students will also learn how to navigate and manipulate data using argumentation technologies, and how to apply critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis skills to structure and handle data.
The course will be taught in 20 credit modules plus a 60 credit dissertation. Students will be required to complete 180 credits for the award of the MSc (including 60 credits for the dissertation).
Students will complete core modules on "Persuasion, Negotiation and Decision Making"; "Argument Dynamics"; "Knowledge Cartography"; and "Opinion Analysis and Argument Mining". They will have a choice of two from the following four modules: "Legal Knowledge Engineering"; "BI Systems introduction and overview"; "Data Analysis and Visualisation"; and "Advanced Stats and Data Mining". They will further undertake a research project in Reasoning Analytics, on a topic to be agreed with their tutor.
The MSc in Reasoning Analytics is led by members of the Argumentation Research Group at the University of Dundee (ARG:dundee). ARG:dundee is located in the School of Computing at the University of Dundee. The group are interested in many aspects of argumentation, from the theoretical to the practical. Its freely downloadable software such as Araucaria (a tool for performing argument analysis) has over 10,000 users, and it has the largest freely accessible corpus of analysed argumentation anywhere in the world in ArgDB. The group has over 120 refereed papers in print, and also hosts the editorial office for the Taylor & Francis journal, Argument and Computation.
