Course content

Sustainable water management is the focus of concern for many different groups in society today, including politicians, water managers, scientists, the public, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO)s and industry. Their concerns are however diverse, ranging from worries over the effects of increasing demands on the quantity and economic uses of water, to worries over the quality of water and its effects on people and nature. However, while effort is put into improving water management within these sectors, a major challenge is to combine these different perspectives in sustainable water use.

The IHP-HELP Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science was established as a Category 2 Centre under the auspices of UNESCO in order to to work with UNESCO's water science arm, the International Hydrological Programme and within that, Hydrology Environment Life and Policy, a global network of river basins. The HELP network is concerned with stakeholder engagement, with breaking down communication barriers, and with integrating science research with and policy-into-law. Our Centre works across these areas, and especially, the linkages between them.

We have expertise in water science, especially ecosystem services and flood risk management; in water policy, especially stakeholder engagement and policy analysis; and in water law. We work in all three areas of water law - international law, comparative national law, and water services.

Our LLMs by research are most suitable for candidates with an undergraduate degree in law, though candidates from non-law backgrounds will also be considered. Candidates in employment, who may not be able to undertake a PhD, may wish to apply to enrol on this award part-time.
