The Master by Research in Archaeology offers the opportunity to pursue a research project without entering into the commitment of an MPhil or PhD. The degree is ideal if you are employed, but would like the opportunity to pursue a specific shorter-term research project, resulting in a formal qualification. The distance learning option enables students to study from anywhere in the world.
The MbyRes programmes are two years full time or three years part time. There is no minimum registration period and students may complete their studies within a shorter time scale. However, students who are accessing financial support through the Student Loan Company Postgraduate Research Loan should be aware that funding payments are scheduled across two years of the defined full time programme duration, or three years for part-time equivalents.
Research in the Archaeology Department covers human origins through to the recent past, and is characterised by theoretically informed field-based approaches and a strong commitment to methodological innovation.
Our staff and research students work in Britain, mainland Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America, and in the last research Assessment Exercise (2008) we were ranked second in the UK for World Leading and Internationally Excellent Research in Archaeology (based on the amount of 3* and 4* research).
A MA by Research degree is assessed by a written dissertation of up 40,000 words. Unlike a taught Master’s degree, there is no taught element, so dedication, enthusiasm for the subject, and an ability to work independently are essential. The successful completion of the Master’s degree by research could lead to further Doctoral research.
