Course content
The MA in International Heritage Management and Consultancy offers a unique and innovative approach to the study of heritage. The programme adopts a global, interdisciplinary approach to considering why the past matters; how and why it is cared for in the present; and the ways in which it can inform the future. By using heritage as a lens through which to consider current global challenges such as climate change, conflict, and decolonisation, the MA will prepare you to compete in the growing field of heritage and consultancy. The course takes a future orientated and holistic approach to understanding and caring for the past, drawing upon cutting edge theory inspired by new developments in the field of critical heritage studies.
Based at our Penryn campus, this programme is convened by the Humanities department (History and English) and taught in collaboration with leading interdisciplinary researchers and industry specialists. This interdisciplinary approach gives you access to expertise from academics in The Business School, Politics, Law, Geography and Renewable Energies; enabling you to develop the skills relevant to real life consultancy. You will benefit from the way the course is enriched by links with our leading research centres for Environmental Arts and Humanities, and Environment and Sustainability.
The programme incorporates regular opportunities to visit and learn about heritage management in situ from on-site experts. You will benefit from the programmes proximity to unique heritage sites including UNESCO World Heritage sites, The Eden Project, and National Trust and English Heritage properties such as St Michaels Mount and Tintagel Castle, as well as museums of national standing such as the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. In addition, the International Field Course offers a unique and exciting opportunity to put theory into practice in a non-UK context. It will immerse you in an experience that explores competing agendas among heritage, industry, government, environment, and local and source communities, raising questions of ownership, different cultural approaches to heritage management, and the importance of balancing economic, environmental and cultural needs.
