Course content

This course provides you with an in-depth appreciation of project management theories and practices and their importance to contemporary businesses, including the need to manage and plan complex projects in an integrated manner, within an overall business environment. You will study the skills and tools that help projects run more efficiently and effectively, particularly in the face of the challenging but highly rewarding project-based business environment. This course is aimed primarily at graduates who wish to move into a project management role. It is suited to those who wish to work in the complex functions of major construction, IT, manufacturing, services and retail, as project managers.

The course provides the essential frameworks, concepts and toolkit required for the management of projects, programmes, and portfolios. Formal lectures are supported by seminars or tutorials. Lectures will be provided by an experienced team with a vast experience in teaching and industry who will be blending theoretical knowledge with practical methodologies, methods and techniques to provide an employment-focused skills-set of project management. Guest lectures will host leading project managers and consultants. There is an extensive use of case studies in seminars to apply theory to practice and explore and critically analyse the benefits of project management tools used in those case projects. Our case studies are based on real small, medium and mega projects from variant industries such as oil and gas, IT, services, retail, construction and health care.

We encourage you to:

• Learn through innovative teaching techniques including case studies, simulations and interactive games.

• Gain the opportunity to network with experts from industry and academia, exploring real-world expertise and advice for students.

• Investigate real-business projects through guest speakers and group work projects.

• Gain the experience of the industry standard backed with theory.

The course offers the opportunity for you to apply your newly acquired knowledge in Project Management through a three-month assessed research project, which is undertaken during the summer. The output from the project will be in the format of a potentially publishable academic article. The best papers will be taken forward for publication by your Research Supervisor. This is a fantastic opportunity to strengthen your CV with a published conference or journal article.
