Entry requirements

Entry requirements for this course are normally:

  • An Honours degree (2:2 or above) in electronic engineering, computing or related disciplines or an equivalent professional qualification.
  • Other qualifications and/or experience that demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills at Honours degree standard may also be acceptable.

If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent will be considered acceptable. Course content

If you are a graduate in computing or an engineering related subject and wish to pursue a career in the Internet of Things (IoT) industry, this is the course for you. This course focuses on the rapidly expanding and challenging modern technology of the Internet of Things.

The term IoT encompasses everything connected to the internet, and it is increasingly being used to define objects that "talk" to each other.Connected machines and objects in factories offer the potential for a 'fourth industrial revolution', and experts predict more than half of new businesses will run on the IoT by 2020.

Jobs in IoT require professionals who can combine skills such as software, hardware, and analytics, as the system architecture, coding and operations all have to come together for successful IoT.

The course is designed to provide you with the opportunity to acquire knowledge across a range computing and engineering systems disciplines and develop skills in the use of cloud computing, communication systems, cyber physical systems and security.

You will use our modern facilities which include an impressive range of professionally equipped laboratories and on campus IoT communication infrastructure.With help from the Digital Catapult, and IoTUK we have installed an IoT Gateway on campus, which will be used to connect our IoT sensors and edge devices; such as Arduinos and Raspberry Pis, to a cloud for IoT.“IoTUK is a national programme designed to accelerate the UK’s Internet of Things (IoT) capability, launched as part of the Government’s £32m investment in IoT.”

With our support you can develop an ability to critically evaluate existing and emerging IoT technologies, and apply knowledge, understanding and analytical and design skills in support of technical design/development projects. All this will prepare you for challenges in application of the IoT in industry, research and business.
