Course content

This exciting programme offers two pathways allowing you to specialise in teaching 3-7 or 7-11 age ranges. It equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to become effective, successful primary teachers.

The 38-week course combines University and school-based learning. You’ll spend 24 weeks overall in two contrasting placement schools, gaining broad experience of teaching in different environments. But you’ll underpin this experience with time in the university environment, where you’ll develop your understanding of educational theory and research, discuss issues arising from your reading and placements and form practical strategies for primary teaching.

You’ll build your knowledge of National Curriculum requirements in core and non-core subject areas and explore how children develop their own knowledge and skills, giving you the tools to achieve them in the classroom and beyond. You’ll focus on topics and activities for use in the classroom and think about different learning styles, classroom organisation and behaviour management.

A PGCE is a one-year course for graduates wishing to follow a course a Initial Teacher Education (ITE). It includes a range of academic tuition and teaching experience, all of which is considered both in assessment for PGCE, and as evidence that you have met the Standards for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
