Entry requirements

Candidates shall normally be required to hold a Level 8 degree (National Qualifications Authority of Ireland) (Hons 2.2 or above) having graduated (or about to graduate) from an undergraduate degree programme that is recognised by the Teaching Council for the purposes of pursuing a teaching qualification in mathematics at post-primary level. Candidates should note that in order to be recognised for the subject of Mathematics an applicant must have completed a degree listed on the "Autoqual's" list for the subject of Mathematics (see Teaching Council website) and they must also meet the criteria for the subject of Mathematics. It is recommended that graduates of Engineering and other degrees apply directly to the Teaching Council for recognition of their degree for teaching mathematics. Early application to the Teaching Council is advised.

Course content

The Professional Master of Education (Mathematics) is a two-year full-time initial teacher education programme designed to train specialist mathematics teachers for Irish post-primary schools. It facilitates an interactive and imaginative approach to teaching mathematics at post-primary level in order to enhance school students' mathematics learning and performance. Candidates shall normally be required to hold a Level 8 degree (NQAI) (Hons 2.2 or above) having graduated (or about to graduate) from an undergraduate degree programme that is recognised by the Teaching Council for the purposes of pursuing a teaching qualification in mathematics at post-primary level.
