The Goal of the Department of Musculoskeletal Biology is to understand the fundamental biochemistry and cell science that underlies ageing and disease of skeletal muscle, bone, joints, cartilage, tendon and ligament. We are also engaged in research to develop novel therapies for such chronic disorders including regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. The Department boasts an enviable array of expertise from medical and veterinary clinician-scientists to biomedical scientists and epidemiologists and has state-of-the-art facilities. Our research programmes are generously funded through grants from the MRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, Wellcome Trust, AgeUK and other charities.
The key principle behind our research is the recognition over the last decade that to elucidate cell, organ or organismal function in health and disease requires an integrated approach utilising the best available cutting-edge technologies.
We offer MPhil, PhD, MD and post-doctoral training programmes that provide exposure to the wide-range of disciplines on offer. Studentships are also extensively supported by productive national and international collaborations and joint PhD study programmes. Many of our students also are recognised for the role they play in communicating the science to the wider community. On completing their PhDs many of our students go on to take competitive post-doctoral positions in the UK or overseas, or elect to take alternative career paths in the NHS, government or the commercial sector.
