Most of our Master’s courses and research programmes are available both full and part-time to provide flexible delivery to meet the demands of busy lifestyles.

Student satisfaction

We value our reputation for teaching and support. In the last Higher Education Academy Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey, an average of 90 per cent of respondents said that their course at the University of Portsmouth had met or exceeded expectations. An average of 91 per cent of respondents reported that the learning resources on their course had met or exceeded expectations and an average of 78 per cent believed their Master’s course had improved their employment prospects.

Our Faculties

The Portsmouth Business School offers degree awards and executive education across accounting, finance, law, business and management disciplines - most of which have been accredited by their respective professional bodies. The courses range from part-time work-based Foundation Degrees to postgraduate programmes. The Portsmouth Business School is recognised as a Centre of Research Excellence by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. It has close involvement with both public and private sector organisations and an impressive reputation for research and academic excellence.

The Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries is at the heart of the booming creative and cultural industries in the South of England, which itself is one of most successful and dynamic regional economies in the world. The Faculty incorporates the creativity and expertise of the following Schools and Departments; Architecture, Art, Design and Media, Film and Media, Creative Technologies, the Centre for Enterprise and the Institute of Industrial Research. The Faculty is united by high speed technology and specialisms in communications in all its forms - words, music, images, and performance.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences incorporates the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies, the School of Education and Continuing Studies, the School of Languages and Area Studies and the School of Social, Historical and Literary Studies. Our research centres explore various themes in these subjects, which informs the teaching and supervision of our students.

The Faculty of Science has a longstanding and well-deserved reputation for excellence in both research and teaching. The Faculty offers programmes in Geography, Geology and Earth Sciences, Health Sciences and Social Work, Psychology and Sports Science.

The Faculty of Technology has an established and well-deserved reputation for excellence in teaching, research, development and knowledge transfer. It offers a wide range of accredited programmes in the fields of the Built Environment, Computing, Electronic Communication Systems and Networks, Engineering and Environment and Heritage. The Faculty also provides the innovative Learning at Work Master's programme.



Our support services provide advice and guidance to all students for the duration of their time at University. They include the Academic Skills Unit (ASK), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Additional Support and Disability Advice Centre (ASDAC) and our Counselling and Chaplaincy service.

Our active Students' Union and Sport and Recreation Department offer membership to sports societies and interest clubs, as well as three sports centres, housing two sports halls, squash courts, two dance/martial arts studios, a synthetic turf pitch, netball courts and grass pitches for football, rugby and lacrosse. We have a 100-station gym with a CV room, resistance zone and free weights room.

Our International Office takes great care to help you settle into your new way of life within the University and the local community. International Office staff travel extensively overseas and would be delighted to meet you and answer your questions. Once you arrive in Portsmouth, they provide extensive support to make your time here as stress free and enjoyable as possible, enabling you to focus on your studies.

Postgraduate research opportunities

Research degree programmes provide opportunities to undertake extensive and original research into a specific chosen field. We have a thriving research community of more than 800 research students across five faculties who are supported by over 500 highly trained research supervisors.

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework in 2014, over 60 per cent of research submitted by the University was rated as world leading and internationally excellent. Our Graduate School provides excellent support and guidance for the university-wide community of research students. Our comprehensive research degree training and development programme offers over 150 workshops on a wide range of topics to help you develop your research, professional and transferable skills.

Scholarships, bursaries and discounts

Full fee payment discount

If you opt to pay your tuition fees direct to the University and pay in full before registration, a two per cent discount applies. Alternatively, the University offers the flexibility of paying your fees in five monthly instalments.

Lloyd's Register Foundation Scholarships

For those interested in our science and engineering courses the Lloyd's Register Foundation (LRF) is delighted to offer three full fee competition-funded scholarships for eligible Master's courses starting in September 2016.

Business Scholarships for Master's courses

For those interested in business courses, Portsmouth Business School offers a number of scholarships providing an additional 40 per cent discount off tuition fees to self-funding home and EU Master's students. Additional scholarships are also available for MBA programmes.

Portsmouth is a lively and cosmopolitan city on the south coast of England and it enjoys some of the best weather in the UK. It is an interesting and attractive place where the historic sits comfortably with the modern. The city is compact - everything you could possibly need is within easy reach.

Just 90 minutes by direct train from the centre of London, Portsmouth is also within easy reach of Heathrow, Gatwick and Southampton airports. As a busy ferry port, it is a gateway to the continent with regular sailings to France and Spain.
