The programme is not limited to specific language pairs – students work into and out of English and another language of their choice or monolingually in English. French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese and Spanish are provided every year. Depending on the number of students, other language combinations may also be offered, notably Arabic, Polish, Portuguese and Russian. The decision to run any particular language combination will be at the discretion of the Programme Convener in consultation with the Head of Department. Entry to the programmes is open to applicants with a good first degree in a relevant topic area (linguistics, modern languages, economics, law, film etc.). All candidates will need to demonstrate excellent writing and communication skills in English. We particularly welcome students who have done a degree in Translation. The programmes are also open to candidates with an appropriate professional qualification or with proven professional expertise in the field of translation. All candidates under this category will be interviewed by the Programme Convener. All applicants will be required to supply the names of two referees that will be able to comment on the applicant's academic suitability and knowledge of English where appropriate.
