About the course

The programme is aimed at providing a high-quality postgraduate taught qualification in management and leadership for health care providers. In particular, the programme is suitable for:

  • Mid-level public health officers seeking career progression or moving into leadership roles in government, NGO and multilateral organisations such as UNICEF, WHO, USAID, especially in low and middle income countries.
  • Health practitioners taking up management roles in hospital or health departments.
  • Managers of fast-growing health insurance and health maintenance organisations in low and middle income countries.
  • Others from different disciplinary backgrounds switching career into health management and leadership.
  • Clinical commissioning groups will also benefit.

An international academic community

As one of the largest multi-disciplinary schools of public health and health services research in the UK, ScHARR is a rich academic community. You will be taught by world-leading experts in health economics, public health sciences, the sociology of health, health psychology, decision analysis, management sciences, epidemiology, medical statistics and information science. Flexible study routes


We offer both traditional campus-based and online courses. Our high quality online courses are taught by the same expert academic staff who teach our courses in Sheffield and offer an alternative to coming to the UK. Guided by our staff, you can study at a pace that suits your personal circumstances. This can be an effective route for those who need to continue to work while they study. Postgraduate certificates and diplomas are also available.

Introduction to Research Methods; Managing People in Organisations; Systematic Approaches to Evidence Assessment; Accounting and Financial Management; Leading and Managing Health Services; Strategic Management; Foundations of Leadership and Teamwork; Dissertation.

Examples of optional modules

Choices include: Health Needs Assessment, Planning and Evaluation; Marketing of Health Care Organisations; Using Policy to Strengthen Health Systems.

Teaching and assessment


The course is taught completely online. To get the most out of it, you do have to keep up with the overall timetable. But you’re free to study when it suits you, so you can fit the course around your other commitments. Assessment is by coursework and project work.

Information for international students

Overall IELTS grade of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component, or equivalent.
