Course content

This clinically-focussed online part-time course is designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills to deliver a first rate diabetes service, and independently access information to critically assess, evaluate and disseminate the evidence base for diabetes care. This internationally recognised qualification focuses on the person with diabetes and supports the improvement of care. The course recognises the contribution of the whole diabetes team and prepares professionals for specialist practice.

You will develop problem-solving skills in preparation for leadership roles in the global context of diabetes care.

The course is delivered by an innovative and experienced team who have an established international reputation in diabetes and medical education.

The curriculum is based on the International Curriculum for Diabetes Health Professional Education produced by the International Diabetes Federation and therefore meets the highest international standards for diabetes education.

The course starts with a two day residential induction of clinically focussed teaching. Followed by the following six modules:

Principles of Diabetes
Approaches to Care
Promoting Self Care
Management of Diabetes
Complications (1)
Complications (2)

Each easy to use online module will last six weeks, using real life case problems linked to forum based discussions, a reflective portfolio, group activities and a case-based examination

How You Will Study
You will attend an initial 2 day residential course consisting of a series of contemporary lectures across the range of modules, followed by break out groups to develop solutions to relevant clinical problems. The rest of the programme is delivered by directed on-line delivery and assessment.

Information for international students

There is also travel and residential costs for the induction course for international students in South Africa. The suggested accommodation costs in South Africa are 550R - 750R. The residential induction is not mandatory, but we strongly recommend you attend.
