Course content

The coastal zone is now widely recognised as important at national, European and global levels. Skilled graduates who can understand environmental issues in such sensitive areas are in high demand. This accredited programme provides training in coastal engineering with joint emphasis on environmental and oceanographic matters. This one-year course is uniquely provided jointly by academic staff in Civil Engineering and Ocean and Earth Science.

Introductory and core modules: Modelling Coastal Processes; Coastal and Flood Defence; Coastal Morphodynamics; Coastal Sediment Dynamics, Environmental Audit and Risk Assessment; GIS; Introduction to Civil Engineering (for non-engineers); Introduction to Marine Geology (for engineers); Key Skills and Applied Coastal Oceanography; Maritime and Coastal Engineering.
