Entry requirements

First- or upper second-class degree or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University in an appropriate subject (eg physics, electronics, engineering, materials science or mathematics). English language: IELTS 6.0, with minimum of 5.5 in each component.

Whether you intend to gain skills and expertise that will enable you to take up a position in a key industrial sector or embark on further postgraduate research, you will find that our MSc Photonic Technologies will give you the solid intellectual foundation and hands-on practical and technical skills that you need for a successful professional career in science, engineering and related photonics-based industry.

Semester One: Compulsory modules: Lasers; Optical Fibres; Photonics Laboratory and Study Skills
Optional modules: Light and Matter; Microfabrication; Silicon Photonics
Semester two: Compulsory modules: Solid State and Ultrafast Lasers; Photonic Materials; Plasmonics, Metamaterials and Nanophotonics
Optional modules: Nanoscience Technology and Advanced Materials; MEMS Sensors and Actuators; Industrial Dissertation

Semester three: Lab and cleanroom project; four-month, independent research project culminating in a dissertation
