Entry requirements

An upper-second class degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in subjects which show evidence of a basic knowledge of quantitative analysis eg geography, psychology, population sciences, sociology, politics, health sciences or other social science subjects. Degrees in statistics, mathematics, economics etc are also acceptable.

Non-graduate qualifications, in particular the Graduate Diploma of the Royal Statistical Society, may be accepted in place of an undergraduate degree. Full details of previous statistical training in the form of syllabuses, reading lists and, in particular, examination papers, are helpful in assessing your suitability for the programme.

Course content

Are you passionate about investigating social issues and finding evidence through statistics? If so this programme will train you in applied statistical methods and expose you to the cutting edge of statistical practice, thus equipping you with the necessary grounding both to understand and to contribute to the area. You will also learn how to conduct qualitative research. The Masters in Social Research Methods with Applied Statistics is excellent preparation for a career in social research in government, national and international organizations or in the private sector.

We welcome students with limited background in quantitative methods. You can tailor the course to your interests by choosing from a wide range of optional modules, covering areas such as demography, global health, gerontology and qualitative and mixed research methods.

Information for international students

If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate your English ability by meeting our Band C requirements: IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all components. For information on other accepted English language tests, please see our website.
