Course content

The MSc in Dementia Studies and Gerontology is an online, international course delivered jointly by the University of Stirling, Scotland and the University of Louisiana at Monroe, USA. You will join a vibrant group of students from all over the world, including UK, USA, Canada, Australia, India and elsewhere to study ageing and its implications, including demographics, lifestyles, active ageing and care and support in older age. You will focus specifically on the important challenge of dementia for older people, their families and communities and care providers throughout the dementia journey.

The modules within this course are delivered using a blended learning approach with an optional face-to-face component but with the majority of teaching activity taking place online using specially designed websites. The module websites provide access to all the learning materials including a module workbook, an electronic reading list and other resources. In addition, discussion boards and chat rooms enable and encourage interaction between students and the teaching team. The teaching team includes established gerontology and dementia studies lecturers as well as specialist support from IT and library staff. Special emphasis is placed on a collaborative and problem solving approach to learning and on encouraging reflective practice.

This is the only available international course in Gerontology and Dementia Studies that we know about. We are excited to be able to offer this opportunity, which brings together two internationally renowned Universities.

The MSc in the Dementia Studies was the first online dementia studies programme in the UK and has now been running successfully for 10 years, going from strength to strength with a growing number of students both in the UK and internationally.
