Course content

The Suffolk and Norfolk Initial Teaching Training programmes for both Primary and Secondary teachers aim to bring together the very best of school centred and academic training to produce competent and confident Newly Qualified Teachers who consider and reflect upon the purposes of education as well as having high levels of knowledge, understanding and skills in the learning and teaching of children.

The SCITT programme is based on a continuous and not a modular framework and is designed to facilitate maximum experiential learning. The course begins with shared induction activities leading into the five main integrated components that make up the SCITT programme of training. Through this framework, trainees will be able to demonstrate that they have met the Teachers’ standards for QTS. This framework will also provide opportunities for trainees to demonstrate attainment of the PGCE standard. The overall structure of the course is based on a number of core principles and aims to combine the best practice and widespread experience of the school-based Graduate Teacher Programme with the traditional HEI PGCE routes by:

  • Maximising the amount of time spent in school;
  • Providing ‘group’ experiences away from school and by electronic contacts;
  • Encouraging a rapid ‘settling in’ element by commencing training before the start of the school term so that trainees can experience the start of term in the school setting;
  • Providing a real opportunity for trainees to integrate as contributory members of staff and so gain the maximum benefit of ‘situated learning’
