Entry requirements

2:1 honours degree in a history subject. Applicants with a 2:1 honours degree in another strongly-related subject will be considered on an individual basis.

Course content

This online programme offers a broad History award, both thematically and geographically, which allows you to study a range of subjects reflecting the research expertise of the dynamic team at the Centre for History

The MLitt History features unique modules in, for example, maritime, sport and British history; palaeography and languages of the North Atlantic; as well as historiography.

The course is available to study entirely online, with support from staff and fellow students through online discussion forums.

Course structure

You can study individual modules for personal or professional interest, or work towards the PgCert, PgDip or Masters degree.


The core module is Varieties of History.

· You will also choose two option modules which may include: The British Empire; Introduction to Palaeography and Languages for North Atlantic History; Britishness and Sport; plus one module from the MLitt History of the Highlands and Islands.


The core modules is Primary Sources for History


· You will also choose two modules from the MLitt History of the Highlands and Islands.



To achieve the award of MLitt you must complete a research dissertation.
