Highly regarded internationally as a research environment for both analytic and continental philosophy with the largest philosophy graduate school outside Oxford, the department is committed to philosophical pluralism and to programme development and innovation. Its Philosophy and Literature Research Centre is a focus for distinguished scholars from around the world.

Research Excellence Framework (REF) score

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, we ranked first in the UK for the quality of our research and fourth overall, with over 90% of the research published by our staff in books and journal articles over a six year period from 2008 assessed as being ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world leading’.
