Course content

The course will help you bridge idea and ambition, offering insight and strategy to execute your business plan with flair. You will learn how to set yourself apart in a competitive market and explore market research, Intellectual Property (IP) development, commissioning and delivery.

How you will learn:

  • You will 'bring' your business, projects and associated plans into the course, and your coursework is structured around maximising creative and commercial opportunities
  • You will be encouraged to research outside the University and into your sector, trying out newly gained methods and business knowledge to research the forces that can make your project or business happen.
  • We will drive personal development and business growth through reflective learning. You will do this by experiencing media products, reflecting on your response, comparing the product to others, and planning for a better outcome. This has been particularly successful in unstructured and uncertain environments such as management and healthcare education.

This MA is run in collaboration with the Westmont Enterprise Hub, providing an additional layer of business expertise, innovation potential and connection points to disruptive incubators.

With freelance and commissioning contracts dominating the industry, you will learn how to thrive as a freelancer, self-employed contractor or independent production company. To prepare you for this business environment, you will work on projects, collaborate with peers who tackle similar challenges, learn to pitch credibly, and receive feedback from industry specialists.

This real-world experience is essential for helping you create impactful work for clients as well as develop an agile business approach.

You will be taught by experts from a range of specialist backgrounds who share a passion for media, creativity and entrepreneurship. Alongside lectures, workshops and one-to-one tutorials, our regular talks from high-profile industry speakers will inspire and give you an opportunity to see how knowledge is applied in the industry to lead successful ventures and inspire.

Past speakers have included award-winning filmmakers, distributors, broadcasters and other leading media decision-makers such as Jeffrey Katzenberg (Disney, Dreamworks, Quibi), graphic designer Kate Moross (Ustwo) as well as Oscar winner and UWL alumni Rebecca Harris.

On completion of the course you should have a project portfolio that may include a prototype, business plan and pitch deck ready to be launched or being commissioned. Most importantly, you should emerge a well-rounded and resilient media producer with astute knowledge on how to steer your business onto a path of success.
