Entry requirements

You will need: A minimum classification of 2.1 in a first degree (or equivalent); and, preferably, A Masters degree (or Masters degree pending); and (if English is not your first language) Appropriate English Language qualifications (you will normally be required to achieve minimum IELTS scores of 6.5 or equivalent). You will also need to have the commitment and motivation to undertake a sustained programme of independent and self-directed study and training as a researcher.

Course content

Based within our Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media (CREAM) our research into Music is part of one of the UK's leading centres for research in visual media art, design and music. It boasts over 30 researchers and 30 PhD students, including internationally renowned artists, film-makers, photographers, theorists, critics and musicians.

The focus of our music research is on popular music, with different and complementary approaches to music technology and production, original composition, performance, and popular musicology and analysis.

Information for international students

If English is not your first language you must demonstrate English language skills to the equivalent of IELTS 6.5 at commencement. We will then expect you to undertake courses to develop your English language competence to the equivalent of IELTS 7.0 in your first year of study.
